PC tune-up related terms

Defragmenter - A Windows utility which consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk, then rearranges them to increase available space. As a result, your computer works with the hard drive faster and more efficiently.

Disk Cleanup - A Windows utility that increases available hard drive space by deleting unused files and compressing old files.

Driver - a program routine that tells the Operating System how a hardware device works. The hardware device may be an internal component, such as a video card or modem, or an external device like a printer or scanner.

Contiguous files - Files stored next to each other on the physical hard drive that are not fragmented.

Restore Point - A record or snapshot of the computer at a certain date and time that is used by the System Restore utility.

System Restore - A Windows utility that increases available hard drive space by deleting unused files and compressing old files.

Temporary internet files - HTML, images, applications and other Web page content that is stored on your hard disk for quick viewing while surfing the Internet.

Temp files or Windows temporary files - Files created during normal usage of the computer. They are used temporarily and may not be deleted when they are no longer necessary.

Third party hardware - Any internal or external physical component of the computer that was not manufactured by HP. For example, Logitech Web Cam.

Third party software - Any program or application on the computer that was not created by HP. For example, Symantec's Norton Antivirus.
